I've never been to ND or Bismarck and so learned a lot about it. It was settled by European Americans and was originally named Missouri Crossing because Lewis & Clark crossed the Missouri there. The Northern Pacific Railway renamed it Bismarck in honor of German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Railroad officials hoped to attract German settlers and German investment in the railroad.
